1Direct Expense and Staff Expense per Investment News 2018 Study of Pricing and Profitability.  Direct Expenses include salaries, bonuses, commissions, and incentive-based compensation for Owners, Owner-Advisors, Non-Owner-Advisors, and Investment Managers/Research.  Direct expenses represented 36.2% of gross revenue.  Staff Expense includes staff compensation, payroll taxes, and cost of benefits.  Staff expense represented 19.6% of gross revenue.  Neither Direct or Staff expenses included rent, utilities, technology costs, marketing, travel, insurance, depreciation, taxes, etc.
